One Contraction Closer to Geula

A Midwife's Reflection on Twins, Birth, and Hope

"The redemption of Israel will come kima kima—little by little, like the dawn slowly spreading across the sky."
(Jerusalem Talmud, Berachot 1:1)

(Names and identifying details have been changed to protect the family's privacy.)

As I drove home after accompanying a beautiful natural twin birth in the hospital, one question wouldn't leave me.

If every Jewish baby brings the world one step closer to Geulah… what might the birth of twins teach us?

Does it mean double redemption?

Double hope?

Double light?

I don't know.

But I do know this.

Every time I witness a birth, I leave feeling that I have witnessed something far greater than medicine.

As a midwife, I have learned to believe in women.

To trust the wisdom Hashem lovingly placed within their bodies.

To protect the natural physiology of birth whenever it is safe to do so.

Birth is usually not a problem waiting to be solved.

It is a miracle waiting to unfold.

The more years I spend beside laboring women, the more convinced I become that nature is one of Hashem's greatest teachers.

Healthy birth has its own rhythm.

Its own wisdom.

Its own timing.

Our role is not always to direct it.

Often, our greatest role is to create safety, offer encouragement, patiently observe, and know when not to interfere.

Perhaps that is why birth reminds me so deeply of Geulah.

Our Sages teach that redemption comes kima kima (little by little).

Not all at once.

Birth unfolds the same way.

One contraction.

One breath.

One prayer.

One act of courage.

Then suddenly…

A baby's first cry fills the room.

Pain becomes purpose.

Fear becomes joy.

Hope becomes visible.

Recently, I had the privilege of accompanying Sarah through the birth of her twin daughters.

Her pregnancy had not been easy.

Weeks of contractions.

Physical exhaustion.

Uncertainty.

Yet with remarkable courage, faith, and perseverance, she carried her daughters to nearly 37 weeks.

When labor began, it unfolded naturally in the hospital.

That is what made it so beautiful.

Not because there were no doctors or midwives.

Quite the opposite.

There was an experienced team who respected the natural process of birth.

They watched carefully.

They remained prepared.

They intervened only when needed.

The room was filled with calm, confidence, and trust.

Sarah's husband never left her side.

He encouraged her.

Brought her food and water.

Whispered tefillot.

Smiled.

Believed in her.

Sometimes believing is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person.

Late that afternoon, two beautiful little girls entered the world.

Both were born naturally.

Both were head down.

Only twelve minutes apart.

Even after birth, no one rushed to separate mother and babies.

Those first sacred moments were protected.

She held them.

She kissed them.

She nursed them.

The room quietly waited.

As a midwife, people often ask whether the second twin is easier to birth.

The answer is: not always.

After the first baby is born, we hope the second baby descends into the pelvis before the cervix begins to contract again.

Even the second twin deserves patience.

Space.

Wisdom.

Trust.

Every baby enters the world in its own way.

Perhaps every soul does too.

Then another thought entered my heart.

For months these sisters shared one womb.

Two placentas conjoined with a thin sheath and blood vessels.

One pregnancy.

One beginning.

Yet they never shared one soul.

Each entered this world with her own face.

Her own cry.

Her own personality.

Her own mission.

Perhaps this is one of the deepest lessons of Geulah.

Redemption is not about making everyone the same.

It is about unique souls learning to live together in harmony.

Not uniformity.

Unity.

Maybe twins do not represent double Geulah.

Maybe they remind us that Hashem's blessings are abundant.

Love multiplies.

Hope multiplies.

Light multiplies.

Every Jewish baby adds another light to the world.

Sometimes…

Hashem blesses us with two lights at once.

As I continued driving home, I realized I had witnessed much more than the birth of two beautiful daughters.

I had witnessed faith.

Marriage.

Gentleness.

Courage.

Patience.

Hope.

And perhaps…

one more contraction closer to Geulah.

"Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy."
Psalm 126:5

May we continue believing in women.

Honoring birth.

Supporting families.

Trusting the wisdom with which Hashem created our bodies.

So many miracles throughout the pregnancy and birth process we are not even always aware of or notice.

And may every child born add another measure of light to the world until we merit the complete Geulah, speedily in our times, amen! MAZAL TOV!
